After the presentation you can apply for topics that you find interesting.

Our presentation will be in English, but you are free to choose the language of your report and of the communication with your supervisor between English and German.

FIN-Forschungspreis 2015

20.01.2016 - Dr. Georg Krempl and Daniel Kottke have been awarded with the "FIN-Forschungspreis 2015". This year, the best publication of the faculty has been chosen to be "Optimised probabilistic active learning (OPAL): For Fast, Non-Myopic, Cost-Sensitive Active Classification." by Georg Krempl, Daniel Kottke, and Vincent Lemaire. It was published in the special issue of the ECMLPKDD 2015 Journal Track in the Journal of Machine Learning.

Studentischer Forschungspreis 2015

19.01.2016 - Stefan Räbiger is the recipient of the award "Studentischer Forschungspreis 2015" for the paper "A Framework for Validating the Merit of Properties that Predict the Influence of a Twitter User", which was co-written by Prof. Myra Spiliopoulou. It was awarded by the faculty of Computer Science of the Otto-von-Guericke University. The paper is based on his master's thesis which was also supervised by Prof. Spiliopoulou.

Best Paper Award at iKnow

18.11.2015 - The KMD group is happy to announce that the paper "How to Select Information That Matters: A Comparative Study on Active Learning Strategies for Classification" by Christian Beyer, Georg Krempl and Vincent Lemaire has won the Best Paper Award at this year's iKnow (15th International Conference on Knowledge Technologies and Data-Driven Business 2015, Graz, Austria).

MDigiEng student receives OvGU-Stipendium

13.10.2015 - Mrs. Nedime Tugce Habip, student of the Master Digital Engineering, is the recipient of the 2015 award "Otto-von-Guericke-Stipendium". The city of Magdeburg gives this award since 2003 to international students with excellent academic performance and social engagement. Next to her superior performance in her studies, Mrs. Habip engages in mentoring international students from the Master Digital Engineering and Master Data & Knowledge Engineering degrees and in further social activities in the University and in our city. Mrs. Habip was nominated by the studies coordinator of the Master Data & Knowledge Engineering, Prof. Myra Spiliopoulou.

HfTL bestows the title of professor on Christian Czarnecki

31.07.2015 - In March 2015 Christian Czarnecki has joined the Department of Economics at HfTL, a University of Applied Sciences, located in Leipzig, Saxony. Now HfTL bestows the title of professor to him.

At his position, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christian Czarnecki continues his research on enterprise transformations, reference models and enterprise architectures with an emphasis on the telecommunication industry. His teaching includes subjects of process management and enterprise modelling.

Christian Czarnecki has over 10 years of experience in international consulting firms. He was responsible for many transformation projects in Europe, Middle East, and North Africa. In October 2013, he received his PhD from the Otto-von-Guericke-Univ. Magdeburg. He wrote his thesis as external PhD student at the Faculty of Computer Science under the supervision of Prof. Myra Spiliopoulou, KMD Research Lab. 'Open Challenges for Data Stream Mining Research' selected as notable article

01.07.2015 - The article "Open Challenges for Data Stream Mining Research", published in ACM SIGKDD Explorations has been selected as "notable article in computing in 2014".

Quoting Lindsay Weaker from ACM Computing Reviews: "We would like to acknowledge and congratulate you for the selection of 'Open challenges for data stream mining research' as a notable article in computing in 2014. Computing Reviews' 19th Annual Best of Computing list consists of book and article nominations from our reviewers, CR category editors, the editors in chief of journals we cover, and others in the computing community. (...) Thank you for your outstanding contribution to the computing community.".

Student Reseach Award for Uli Niemann

14.01.2015 - The faculty of computer science Magdeburg has awarded KMD staff member Uli Niemann the faculty's 2014 Student Research Award for the article

U. Niemann, H. Völzke, J.-P. Kühn, and M. Spiliopoulou. Learning and inspecting classification rules from longitudinal epidemiological data to identify predictive features on hepatic steatosis. Expert Systems with Applications, (41)11:5405-5415, Elsevier BV, September 2014.

The article was written within the frame of scientific individual project during Uli's Master study of Business Information Systems and employs data from the Study of Health in Pomerania (SHIP). This work is a cooperation of the KMD research lab with the University Medicine Greifswald.

OvGU-Lehrpreis 2014 für Summerschool Lernende Systeme/ Biocomputing

14.11.2014 - Das Proseminar Summerschool Lernende Systeme / Biocomputing erhält den Otto-von-Guericke-Lehrpreis 2014, welcher diesjährig unter dem Schwerpunkt Interdisziplinarität ausgeschrieben wurde. Stellvertretend für alle Beteiligten werden die Initiatoren Dr. Krempl, Prof. Tönnies, Prof. Spiliopoulou und PD Dr. Reinhard König am 20.11.2014 für Ihre Leistung im Rahmen des Tags der Lehre geehrt. Die Summerschool ist die Einführungsveranstaltung des Profilstudiengangs "Lernende Systeme/Biocomputing", bei der die Studierenden die unterschiedlichen Forschungsansätze der verschiedenen Disziplinen Informatik, Neurowissenschaften, Psychologie und Biologie kennenlernen.

Best Student Paper Award for Tommy Hielscher

02.06.2014 -  We are happy to announce that Tommy Hielscher has won the Best Student Paper Award at this year's CBMS (27th International Symposium on Computer-Based Medical Systems 2014) for his paper "Using Participant Similarity for the Classification of Epidemiological Data on Hepatic Steatosis". His work is funded as part of the DFG project IMPRINT and in cooperation with the University of Greifswald.
